The doorbell rang as Juliana shuffled from one foot to the other on the sidewalk behind him. Hank knew his daughter had not wanted to join him, but it was a good chance to get to know some people in their new town.
Larry opened the door wide, smiling. "Welcome, Hank! We’re so glad y’all came." Larry shook Hank’s hand and looked past him. "And this must be Juliana." She smiled a timid greeting. "Juliana, welcome. Come in, please, both of y’all."
As they stepped inside, Hank could feel the joy in the house. It was nice to feel warm and he welcomed the change in atmosphere from his own home. He glanced at Juliana and caught a small smile. Oh good, he smiled back. She’s in a good mood and maybe will make some friends.
Larry's wife Carrie joined him to welcome their guests. "We are so happy ya’ll are here to help us celebrate. What can I offer you to drink? We have red or white wine, beer, pop."
Hank nodded as Juliana glanced at him. "Mrs. Bordeaux, thank you so much –"
"Oh, honey. Mrs. Bordeaux is Larry’s mother. We aren't that formal here. Please, call me Carrie."
Hank watched as Juliana responded in stride. "Well, then, Carrie, it’s so nice of you to have included me in your invitation. You have a lovely home."
Hank stepped forward, "Yes, Carrie, thank you so much for inviting both Juliana and me. I’d love a glass of red wine and Juliana, honey, what would you –"
Carrie smiled at Juliana, "Honey, you come with me. We’ll find something you’ll like and I promise your Daddy won’t mind."
Hank watched Carrie whisk his daughter away. As Larry began introducing him, Hank glanced outside and noticed snow began to fall.
We’d like you to craft a piece of fiction or creative non-fiction around the holiday season, keeping in mind that for some people "the holiday season" begins around Halloween and doesn’t end until well after the New Year is underway.
The piece should begin with “The doorbell rang” and end with “snow began to fall.”
The middle is up to you, and the entire thing should be under 300 words.
